Audiovox Pocket PC PhoneBy Ken WilsonDescription: The PPC-6601 Pocket PC Phone is a dual-band (1900/800MHz CDMA) device based on a 400MHz Intel PXA 263 processor running Windows Mobile 2003 Software for Pocket PC Phone Edition. The PPC-6601 offers 128 MB of memory and has the most capacity of any other Sprint wireless device, allowing users to view, create and edit documents; send and receive email or text messages; browse the Web; and listen to news, music and other audio clips faster and easier than ever before. Features and Specifications: Key features of the device include 128MB of RAM and 64MB of flash memory, a 240×320 65K-color TFT touch-screen display that switches between portrait and landscape modes, a QWERTY keyboard, an SDIO card expansion slot, and Bluetooth wireless. It also offers speakerphone capability. Another model (the PPC-6600) with a built-in VGA camera will follow later. The "slide-to-access" QWERTY keyboard (shown at right) enables simple typing of text, and predictive text software from T-9 makes typing easier and faster, according to Sprint. The device also supports Graffiti writing input on its touch screen. A removable lithium ion battery provides up to 3.6 hours of continuous digital talk time or up to six days of continuous digital standby time, Sprint says. Dimensions are 4.9 x 2.75 x .74 inches and it weighs 7.35 ounces. The e-mail client that ships with the PPC6601 supports multiple POP3 and IMAP4 mailboxes and a single Microsoft Exchange server account. Unlike a BlackBerry, which automatically notifies you when you receive an e-mail, you have to turn the PPC6601 on to see if you've received any new messages. However, Sprint does offer GoodLink as an extra service for businesses which automatically notifies client devices when new mail arrives. In addition to GoodLink, the PPC6601 supports Sprint's PCS Business Connection desktop software which pushes e-mail from your desktop Outlook to the device. This enables you to access your corporate e-mail without having to involve your friendly neighborhood IT people. The phone supports text and multimedia messaging in addition to e-mail and voice phone calls, but there's no built-in camera (the Audiovox PPC6600 offers an integrated VGA camera). The PPC-6601 includes Pocket Excel, Outlook, Word, Pocket Internet Explorer 4.0, MSN Messenger, Windows Media Player 10, and ActiveSync (version 3.7.1). Business and personal wireless email is provided by Sprint PCS Business Connection, a service which is said to interface seamlessly with Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino data, extending wireless access to messaging and calendar applications securely and conveniently, according to Sprint. The device also supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync for over-the-air synchronization of email and calendar information with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
Conclusion :
The PPC6601 is great smart phone for people who prefer something other than the Palm OS or want more functionality than what a BlackBerry provides. That said, the QWERTY keyboard may be too small for users with larger fingers. The PPC-6601 is marketed by Audiovox
